Inserting the Running Head

How to insert a running head and page number for APA papers in Word 2013 or 2016

APA format requires a running head at the top of the first page (Title page) of an essay that is different than the running head at the top of subsequent pages.  It also requires each page, including the first page (Title) to be numbered in the top right hand corner. These instructions assume you are adding the running head to a completed paper (or one that has at least 2 existing pages).

Follow these steps (TIP: follow them through to the end. Initially, it may not appear as though it's working, but trust us, it does!)

  1. Click on the Insert tab on the toolbar.
  2. In Header & Footer click on Header then click on Blank.
  3. In Options click Different First Page.
  4. On the first (title) page of your paper at the left margin type: Running head: ABBREVIATED TITLE IN UPPER CASE
  5. Tab once or twice to right margin. Click Page number then click Current position then click Plain number. Close the Header & Footer.
  6. Scroll to page 2.  Click once or twice on [Type here].  Type ABBREVIATED TITLE (omit the label Running head)
  7. Tab once or twice to right margin.  Click Page number, click Current position then click Plain number. Page number 2 should appear in the header.
  8. Close the Header & Footer.
