What is it?

RefWorks is a web-based bibliographic citation manager that allows you to collect, save and organize bibliographic citations to journal articles, books, websites and other sources that you have found during your research.

  • RefWorks will create the bibliography or end notes of a paper automatically, in the format of your choice (e.g., MLA)

  • Many of the Library's databases will allow you to download records directly into your RefWorks account (see separate tab in this guide)

  • Permanent links to full text articles

  • Free to all current Camosun students, faculty & staff (license purchased by the Library with support from the Camosun College Faculty Association PD Fund)

  • If you’re off campus, you’ll have to login to your Camosun Computer account first, then login to RefWorks.

Setting up an account

To create your free RefWorks account, do the following:

  • Connect to the RefWorks Login Page (if you are doing this from off-campus you will need to login to your Computer Account via LibSecure first). The RefWorks link is also available in the Databases by title list.
  • Click on Sign up for an Individual Account
  • Complete all fields in the Registration form
  • Click on Register
  • Once your information has been submitted, you will have immediate access to RefWorks
  • You will receive an email with your username and password. Keep this email.

You may set up multiple accounts, for example - a personal account and an account for use in a group project.

Faculty members may wish to set up a personal account and another account with a read-only password for class use.

Importing electronic resources

Every resource added to RefWorks has a default SOURCE TYPE designation of electronic. You can change the default from electronic to print if you want to customize/change this.

  • Go to the Tools option in the RefWorks toolbar
  • Select Customize from the drop down menu
  • Under Import Options change the Source type from Electronic  to Print
  • Scroll down and Save
